Cloud Chamber

  • thermal conductivity
  • tolerancing
  • circuits

A Wilson Cloud Chamber that makes the paths of radioactive decay visible.

Build notes

This project was inspired by the designs of various modern military equipment and the noninformative UI design of Star Wars technology. The most challenging part of this project was surprisingly not the chamber itself, but dealing with the warping that appears in prints this large.

Reflection Holograms

  • film development
  • laser optics

Multiple reflection (Denisyuk) holograms captured by transforming my room into a darkroom for a few days.

Build notes

This is one of my favorite projects, and I'll be revisiting it soon. Not only are the final holograms neat to own, but the processes of recording the hologram and then developing the film in various chemical baths was just as enjoyable.

Pocket Flamethrower

  • circuits
  • pressure ratings
  • threading compatibility

A handheld flamethrower that creates a large short burst of flame. Not incredibly practical, but a fun build nonetheless.

Build notes

This project only took about three hours to assemble, but most of the time was spent finding the right fittings and valves on amazon. If I were to revisit this project, I would definitely change the external design of it to look more professional, as it is currently held together by tape at the bottom.

SO-ARM100 Build

  • open source DIY
  • electronics

A pair of 6-axis robotic arms. One arm mimics the position of the other, allowing for fluid remote control of the follower arm.

Build notes

This project was, and is still out of my comfort zone. I couldn't tell you how the code works, but I could tell you that the parts should be printed at a low infill because the tolerancing is incredibly tight for the servos. Had I printed everything at 103% scale, it would have taken half as long. The feeling of interacting with an arm that your other arm is in control of is trippy.

Schlieren Imaging System

  • optics
  • thermodynamics

A telescope mirror converted into an imaging system that visualises differences in air pressure.

Build notes

This project was a quick one, and only cost around $20 for the telescope mirror. It's worth noting that I didn't design the original mount for the mirror, but it didn't work too great so I made post-print modifications to it.

Drone Frame Reworks

  • prototyping
  • concepts

A broken tinyhawk drone converted into a Y4 tricopter layout and a classic quadcopter layout, inspired by older security camera designs.

Build notes

Although this frame was even lighter than the original frame and stable in flight, the motors didn't recover from their previous crash enough to lift it more than an inch off of the ground. A fun concept nonetheless.

Cement Pencil Cup

  • mold making
  • cement

A pencil cup cast from cement, inspired by the Yugoslavian spomeniks and 70s architecture.

Build notes

The elevated platform was made to prevent the struggle of fishing around for an eraser under all of the writing utensils. The specific architecture that inspired the column was the Huntington Beach Public Library ramp that circles the fountain.

Offgrid AI Assistant

  • Raspberry PI
  • LLMs
  • product design

A future project thats like 10% done, it'll be a wired and battery powered AI with speech-to-text and text-to-speech.

coming not very soon
Build notes

Kinda regret starting this project so close to the fall semester.
